Pets in the San Juan Islands

Bringing your four-legged friend along? The Islands are pet-friendly! We want them to enjoy their visit as much as you do. Many shops have water bowls on their sidewalks, some allow furry shoppers inside, and some restaurants accommodate outdoor dining with your dog. Be sure to ask each establishment in advance.

Your pet will love the San Juans almost as much as you! With plenty of outdoor activities and pet-friendly indoor stops, the islands are a pet paradise! As you and your fur baby travel, be sure to keep these things in mind:

  • Bring your own dog dish and water bottle to the trails.
  • Always pick up after your pet and use designated trash cans to dispose of their waste.
  • Keep your dog on a leash unless visiting a designated off-leash park.

Be sure to share your adventures on social media with us! We love seeing you and your "entire family" enjoying the islands!

Pet-Friendly Lodging

There are many hotels, inns and bed & breakfast inns that have pet-friendly accommodations in the San Juan Islands.

Find Pet-Friendly Lodging

Can I bring my dog on the ferry?

Your pets are welcome on the Washington State Ferries, as long as smaller dogs are kept in crates at your table or booth, or outside on the observation deck. Dogs riding the ferries must be kept on a leash at all times when out of the car. If you are taking your larger four-legged friend to the passenger deck, be sure to take the most direct route outside.

Is there dog-friendly transportation in the Islands?

Some local transportation companies, including San Juan Transit, allow pets on-leash in their vehicles once you arrive in the islands.

Where can I exercise my dog?

There are several off-leash parks for your energetic pooch, and many attractions welcome them to tag along. You'll find two dog parks on San Juan Island (see Island Rec) and one on Orcas Island near the airport. You can also take your fur baby on a hike, a walk down the beach, or a stroll through the San Juan Islands Sculpture Park near Roche Harbor. Just be sure to keep that leash on!

When should my dog stay home?

Leave your furry friends at home if you're headed to San Juan Island Vineyards or farm activities. Call ahead to your venue or activity with any questions about pet policies. If you need pet day-care, your furry friend can stay at Animal Inn Pet Lodging and Wellness Center - a thirty-acre farm with trails and fenced play yards.

What should I do if I lose my dog or find a lost dog or cat?

If you lose your dog while visiting the islands, run across a stray dog or cat, or are looking for a new dog or cat to adopt, call the Animal Protection Society of Friday Harbor, which is our local animal shelter. For lost or found animals or issues with an unleashed dog, you can also call the Sheriff’s department
